General economic theory is a theoretical instrument for the analysis of economic environment and economic behavior of individuals, households, companies, governments and international organizations. Giving lectures in this field is therefore a natural part of university studies in every economic branch. At the Faculty of Economics instruction in economic theory is provided by the Department of Economics.\r\n\r\nGiving lectures in economics, traditionally divided into microeconomics and macroeconomics, runs in three stages: basic, intermediate and advanced. The basic and intermediate course of microeconomics and macroeconomics is part of master study while the advanced course is part of doctoral study. The department provides teaching in the field of economics also in the courses of life long education and at the technical faculties of the VSB-Technical University of Ostrava. Teachers also cooperate with the University of Ostrava, and with the Faculty of Business Administration at the Silesian University. The Department of Economics keeps contacts with departments of economics at other Czech universities, especially with the departments of microeconomics and macroeconomics at the University of Economics in Prague.
In addition to general economic theory the department gives lectures in the following subjects: Monetary theory, International monetary relations, International finance, International economic integration, History of economic thought, History of the world economy, World economy, Economics of developing countries. Department's research and publication activities are mainly focused on the following issues: macroeconomics of open economy, specificities of small countries economic development, European integration, theory of real estate market, economics methodology, institutional economics.
The Department of Economics is responsible for the doctoral study in the field of 'Economics'.
